Vision Statement

Vision for tomorrow in your Business.

Do you have a vision for where you want your business to be in the near future?  Where is it that you see the business going?  I am not talking about mission statement.  Your mission statement is the reason you are in existence. It is your service or product that you provide or manufacture to the best of your ability.

A Vision Statement describes the organization as it would appear in the future successfully running.  The Vision statement says “Where the company is going to be in the future. So I ask you, what is your vision statement that you have in place of where you see the business in 5, 10 or 20 years from now?  Having a vision statement is important to be able to see future success and as a goal to achieving that success.

Let me offer to you some characteristics of a good vision statement would include.  I would suggest that you start with 5 years away as a beginning point.  You could take this out to 20 years if you like.

First, you need to state it in future tense.  Look into the future and imagine where you want your business to be.  An example of a future statement would be; “My business will be known as the expert in the field of XYZ.”

Second, it must be clear and visible. Can you see yourself clearly?  Can you envision yourself being there on the top of the mountain?  If you can’t see yourself in your vision then your team won’t be able to see it either.  You have to be able to see yourself clear and visible in your statement of where you see the business in 5, 10 or 20 years in the future.

Third, Be Audacious! Really think BIG. Think huge in where you see the business and its future.  There was a speaker I once heard and mentioned the success of a little deli in New York City I believe it was.  That deli was just a small corner deli that had a vision.  It grew to over a 30 million dollar company because it had visions that were larger than any person could imagine. So think BIG when you plan out your vision statement. The bigger the better, Right!!

Fourth and Finally, Once you have your statement that is clear.  Get descriptive with the how and whys. Lay out all the particulars and make a plan.  Set up a time line of what will be done by a certain time frame.  Be as precise as you want to be the more precise the better it will be to see that your vision statement by others.

Let your vision be one that is clear for those on your team. Have it be laid out so everyone can see your vision in their own eyes. The clearer it is seen by others, the more support you will have because of it.

I know that this will be helpful to business owners but it can be useful in other areas of our lives as well.  I wish you much success in your business and in your life.

What is stopping you?

What is stopping you?

Are you stopping yourself from success

After helping many clients lately with the same type of issues, I wanted to write about it so that I can help those of you that might be feeling the same way.  SO, have you ever wondered why you can’t get ahead in your career?  Are you tired of seeing those around you that might not be doing the job as good as you are, and you see them get promoted and being paid a higher salary than you?  I ask you now, what is stopping you from achieving the same thing?  Why aren’t you being promoted and getting paid the big bucks?

This is some of the same questions that clients have come to me asking.  Why can’t they be the ones that are getting ahead in their career and moving up the ladder of success?  Well it is quite simple and is an easy thing to overcome, if you want too.  But, do YOU WANY TOO?

If you answered YES, then keep reading and I will give you some tips that can help you.  If you answered no, I ask you why you don’t want to.  That is up to you if you want to stay where it is that you are at and can accept the pay and the position you are at.  I do encourage you to rethink it and want to move ahead in your career.   Yes, I have run across this in helping people that they are comfortable where they are at and don’t want change.  That is another issue and topic for another article.

Ok let us get started in helping you that want more and to move ahead.  Why do you think that you haven’t moved forward in your career?  Have you looked into changing jobs and signed up for email notifications of jobs you are interested in?  Do you check with your managers and HR department of openings within your company now?  This is one way to be on the offensive taking charge and looking for that advancement.  If you have already done this, what have you done with the emails and talking with management or HR?

You have to act on the emails and submit your resume to HR.  This is obvious right?  But time and time again I have talked with clients that are afraid of submitting that resume, or they check the emails and never do anything else with them.  Why?  People are afraid of rejection and putting themselves out there.  Without action and taking that step you will not be advancing in your career or life.

Being stuck in that same routine and only wishing and dreaming of something better.  Hoping that one day they will be noticed and that dream job will fall in their laps.  Could this happen? Maybe! But wouldn’t you rather make it happen sooner and be the driven force in your success and not leave it up to luck?  I sure would!

If you truly want to move ahead and have that career position that you want.  Then make it happen!  You can make that career move happen by getting noticed as the expert in your area.  Learn all you can and put in that 110% each and every day.  When you receive those email listings of jobs openings. Submit that resume right then to them, do not wait.  If you wait you won’t do it.  Make sure your own HR department in the company you work for now has an updated resume.  Let them be aware of your skill sets and knowledge of the position.  You don’t want to be overly obnoxious about it but be persistent.  We have all heard “Persistence pays off”, right!!

One thing that you will need to do is be who others see you as at work.  By this I mean the way others see you as the one that has the expertise and does the great job, see that in yourself too.  If you don’t see that you are the one that can do the job and are capable.  Then no one else will see that either and you will not be noticed.  You have to be noticed in a positive way as being the expert and doing the best every day.

That is how the others are getting ahead while you are still doing the better job but being passed over. Keep doing that great job, but become noticed by those in charge.  Bring on that level of confidence in yourself and your own self pride.  You are the best person for that career change and will be the best at it.  Know that within you so that others will begin to see that too.  It all starts within you and how you see yourself and how you feel about yourself.

Stop thinking that you aren’t good enough; I hear that so many times from clients.  “I don’t see myself being good enough”.  Why not?  Why don’t you see yourself as good enough, those other people are no better then you are?  They aren’t smarter than you are either, so you can’t think that.  Believe in yourself and feel confident in your own abilities that you are just as good as or better than the others, right!!

If you are unsure of yourself in any way others will see that.  Being timid or shy has a way of working against you in the business world. Being less confident in you portrays lack of ability or drive in getting things accomplished.  I know from my own experiences when I was in high school and just starting in the business world, when I was feeling small and had no confidence in myself, it hindered me.  Once I was put into a position where I had to present and show my work I built up my confidence and then others seen that I was very capable and knew my work inside and out.

Find that confidence within you, it is there, wanting to come out and show the world who you really are already.  That person inside that is confident and intelligent and knows how to get the job done on time and done the best way possible, that person is you.  Helping you overcomes these small issues and to grow into that confident person is what I do best.  It drives me to see you improve and grow being successful in whatever career you are in.   You can do it I know you can, others know you can also.  It is time that you know it about yourself, don’t you think.

Sometimes the only thing that is stopping us from great success, is ourselves.  Don’t stop yourself from greatness, take that step on the path to your success.

Goal Starting point

Goal Starting Point

The Beginning

Imagine how your life could be different?  Think about it for a moment, how your life could be different if it is a career change, changes in your own business, or your relationships.  Most everyone have something that the want to change.

You reading this right now is telling me that you want changes in some area of your life, right?  Just as most people, you will have already tried numerous changes before.  Always looking for that easier way, finding that most of the time the changes did not last or only for a short period of time.  You may be asking what was the difference and why?

Change is possible, if you have everything in place.  First, accept yourself as who you are.  People often time will avoid an honest look at their lives and where they are now, because, they are worried and afraid of what they might find. More importantly is how they will feel about themselves. Accept yourself, have an attitude of acceptance will take care of this issue.  Assess your current way of being objective, without judging. Second, be very clear about what it is that you want. Think about where you want to be. Picture that in your mind in bright detail, seeing yourself at that point in time that you want to be. Get rid of any and all doubts and uncertainties.

This book is developed to help you set your goals and be energized to see those goals become a reality.  If you can find someone that you can partner up with. This is very helpful because of the different point of view that might have that can be of great help to you. Talking about your goals, the goals become real and you will be more likely to follow through with obtaining your goals. It will be quite ok if you go about this on your own, just keep yourself focused and pushing to complete your goals.

Now let us get started on your path to achieving the goals you set for yourself.

It is your choice to make

To reach your goal, you need to find out where you are starting from.  Take a look at where you are now, and how you got to this point. Focus on what you want and what you have been doing already that works for you.  In this section you will see:

  • How to take responsibility up till now
  • Use the Cause and Effect tool
  • Develop your own power
  • Power of your unconscious mind to help you
  • Develop your self-awareness and assess where your life is now

Take Responsibility

First you will need to accept where you are in your life now. Acknowledge that you are the only person who can change your life, no one else can!

 Make the Right Choices

You will need to recognize that you can respond to the events as they happen.  You cannot control what happens around you, it is just part of life. What you can control is how you will respond.  This means it is your responsibility to make choices to the best of your ability.  Keep learning from your experiences this will grow the tools you will have ready and make decisions easier to make a right choice.  Influence people to help you and inspire them to want to help you in reaching your goals.

Being responsible for yourself is not the right to blame yourself or others for something that has gone wrong in the past. You made the best choices you could, according to how you seen the world around you then.  Feeling guilty about things in the past, because at that time you were doing the best you could.

Do not think failure

When something does not go the way you wanted and there was a different result than you wanted. The choice is yours on how you will view what happened. You can see it as a negative and that only bad things will come of this.  However, you can chose to see it as an opportunity to learn from it and know what works and what doesn’t. There is no failure, it is a way to see what didn’t work and know not to repeat that next time.

If you think of yourself as a failure, you are only setting up for more failures.  It is a vicious habit that you have developed over time.  One disappointment started off the cycle and maybe another one close afterwards caused you to believe that you are a failure. You can learn to break that cycle and change the way you see yourself.  Take all of the outcomes and learn from them instead of looking at them as a failure or a success.  Learn from each and every situation; treat each failure in a positive learning experience.  You are creating the habits to succeed.

Have you ever wondered about just being along for the ride? No matter what happens that you have no control over what happens, have you felt this way? That your success is because of your past or what other people will let you do?  Maybe you believe that you are in control of your own destiny, that you make your own way in life?  Well for most people we will label ourselves somewhere in between these two.

Cause and Effect

When asked, people will normally put themselves at the Effect category.  They believe that things just happen to them, maybe even caused by others.  If you listen to the way people talk you can pick up on the clues in the way they express and talk:

  • He is mad at me
  • She pissed me off
  • There is a back-up on the highway again

People that think this way are giving all the power to others on how they feel.  Instead of taking charge of the feelings they have, and finding that positive way to see things around them.  When they do this saying how the feel and what they are doing, is beyond them that they have no control over it all.  Are you this way? I would suggest that you think of it and put yourself in the Cause column instead.  Be the cause of what happens and be in control of the effect it has.  Do not be in the effect column and only be reacting to the cause.  You have the power to control what goes on around you.

Cause and Effect

Cause                                                Effect

Ask “How/What?”                         Asks “Why?”

Has a present/future focus                     Has a focus on the past

Learns from problems                  Feels bad about problems

Be in the Present not the past

You can decide to place yourself at the Cause column and see the changes that are possible.  You will be more likely to see that any issue can be overcome. You will be able to focus on more of what you want, which is a good thing, YES!!  When issues come up, you will be asking questions like:

  • What is going on here?
  • What can I do to make this better?
  • What is important from this issue to me?
When life calls you, act decisively. Be on top of your game. Remember to be in the present and looking towards the future.

Questions place your attention on the present instead of the past, and towards the future.

You have the Power

The power you have is your ability to choose for yourself. When you are strong in your personal power, you will see life is easy. You will feel in charge.

Enjoy Life

You will see that you can control and manage emotions, so you don’t react to issues without regrets later.  You will make choices for yourself and not others. You do things because that is what you have decided to do and not by the coercion of others talking you into it.  You will have a clear mind and be at the ready to rise above any issue that comes your way in life. People will see you and be influenced by you and the way that you act.

You have the power so ACT!

You do not have to feel uncomfortable with your personal power; there is a sense of power over others, or bossing them and telling them what to do. This is a misconception of what power means.  This personal power is your inner strength and ability to achieve your goals. Once you have started building up experiences of achieving your goals, you will see your confidence build and be more confident in yourself and around others.  Once you have that inner power it is your duty to use it wisely.

Relax and stay Calm

When you find those unavoidable stressful situations, here are some things to try no matter the time or where you are at.

  • Locate a spot out in front of you.  Look at the spot without causing your eyes to burn or hurt. Blink when you want to, it is okay.
  • Allow your focus point to widen out more and more allowing your peripheral vision to come into focus. Become aware about what is around you in your field of view.  When you can see out both sides of your eyes on both sides at once.
  • Now allow your hearing and what is around you front and behind you.
  • Relax, knowing everything around you is there and what is going on around you.
  • Stay there as long as you want, relax feeling the calmness overtake you in peace.

Notice what you felt.  What was it that you felt? Most people will feel that increasing relaxation, their breathing slowed down.  Even that little voice that talks in our heads has become quieter now. You can use this anytime that you feel nervous or anxious no matter what situation you find yourself in.  Once you have done this and your eyes need a rest.  Warm your hands together and place them over your eyes and lightly rub your eyes for a short time.

If you have ever studied the Martial Arts you will already understand this technique.

Another area that you will need to practice is paying attention to all that is around you.  See what is ahead of you and around you as you walk during your day.  Focus on your center and you will become aware of your surroundings.  Many if not all of the Martial Arts courses teach this awareness as a personal safety factor.  You can use it for that as well as being focused on your task ahead.

If you would like to find ways and techniques to find your center and how it will benefit you, I suggest you look into a martial arts class.  You can even look into YouTube videos to find centering techniques that might fit you best.

Learn to clear your mind

When you find yourself with too many things going on at once or asking yourself, where do I start?  You should consider clearing your mind; otherwise you could end up constantly fighting with yourself.

Become effective with your time.

How many times have you heard someone at the office or work someplace that they just can’t relax?  This is because they are feeling the pain of something that they do not want to confront and are running from it.  They keep busy because they want to create a distance from whatever it might be that they are running from.  Being busy does not solve the issue it just prolongs it.  Take for just a second and think of all the time that is wasted by doing this.  Time is one thing that we cannot get back.  Once it is gone past us it is gone forever. So whatever that the person is keeping busy to avoid is still there and not going away.  It is just sitting there waiting patiently on them to decide to face the issue or just let it sit there waiting on them.

Why would you want to keep putting it off, wasting time and energy avoiding the issue?  Just take a stand and face the issue you know that you will have to at some point and time.  You might as well do it now and make the best of it.

To be continued….

Monuments Men and Goal Achievements

Monuments Men and Goal Achievements

I watched the movie Monuments Men tonight with the family.  The movie has some great actors in it such as Matt Damon and George Clooney in it along with several other great actors.  But there is one thing that kept coming to mind as I watched this great movie.  I do recommend the movie it is a great movie.  But, what kept coming to mind was that all of these men in the movie had a common goal.  It was that common goal that brought them all together from different areas of the world.

So I asked myself, having a common goal in the work place between management and staff, between the blue collar workers and the white collar workers.  To be the best at providing the best services, the best products and be proud of what they are doing.  Success for the men in the movie was to protect the art works of the great artist of all time.  Shouldn’t your products and services be the best of all there is?

Imagine you company having that common goal that everyone works towards and strived to be the best.  Imagine your company being known as the top of the list in your area of expertise.  I can tell you that you can be at the top of the list.  What I can offer you is simple.

I am that coach and consultant that can help bring your company in tune with that goal.  Success is the one thing that we all want out of our business lives, right?  Don’t you want to achieve that success?  Having a direction with the goals set in place is easier than going around in circles and hoping one day that success will fall into your lap.  Finding your direction to achieve your goals, seeing that direction like a compass needle pointing the way is so much easier!!

Going it alone is hard to do, having a consultant and coach makes it so much better with less time wasted and expense saved.  Wouldn’t you want to save your company money and get things accomplished in a timely manner?  I am, as your consultant and coach, I know you surely would.  Just as the Monuments Men in the movie, having that common goal to succeed and being known as the best there is at what you do.

I offer my expertise in Goal Setting to you, now.  So don’t wait contact me so I can help your company find those common goals.

What is Your Businesses Destination?

What is Your Businesses Destination?

What is the destination that you want to arrive at?  Where is your business going?  Are you in control of the direction your business is headed?  Three important questions that need to be asked, your attention needs to be focused on where you are headed.  Everyone has put a business plan together at some point. Knowing where the business should be headed. Now that the business is built and running, have you looked at the direction the business it going?

When the business is running, people tend to just hang on for the ride. The business takes on a direction of its own sometimes.  Executives and management fall into doing the work from the direction the business has taken on.  Whether it is production or services sometimes it can lead onto a path of a slow downhill spiral over time.  This can take years to happen, not just over night.  When it is realized that the spiral is spinning faster, panic sets in. then the questions ask is what to do now?

In business it is often times over looked as to the direction of the company until it is in the disastrous stages of panic.  The problem is that over time the direction was not checked, looking towards the future.  The sights were set only on the near future right in front of it.  This was the mistake that so many companies and businesses have fallen into.  The results of the company closing and putting people out of work, is the unfortunate direction of the business.

What can be done about it?  Before direction is lost control of, businesses/companies should be aware of the direction sooner, right?!  Simple, but why does it happen so many times to a business. According to the SBA (Small Business Administration) study found that 24 percent of new businesses never make it to their second anniversary. Another 23 percent fail in the next two years. Some high-risk ventures, such as restaurants, have a two-year attrition rate as high as 80 percent. In 2009, an estimated 552,600 new businesses were established in the U.S., according to the SBA, while an estimated 660,900 closed their doors for good.

The United States is in an economic slow period that can not be denied and is the cause of some businesses to close.  But, so many businesses have closed also due to not planning ahead and for the future long term.  Businesses have failed to keep a focus on the future and not just the immediate future. With immediate future, I mean less than 2 to 3 years into the future of right now.

So my question is this.  Do you want to be one of those statistics or do you want to be one that succeeds?  It is all about having a direction and strategy in place for now, tomorrow and next year and finally 5 years down the road.  Your strategy needs to be flexible but not overly flexible that causes it to fail.  Having a consultant working with you is a great investment in ensuring your future is strong.

Planning is important and having a consultant to guide your business along for its future is a wise invest, don’t you think?  Yes, it would be!  The service that a consultant provides is so very valuable.

What is your goal in business?

What is your goal in business?

What do you want from you Business Goals? Easy right, you want to make money and for your business expand.  Let me tell you a clients story, he was the owner of the company. The company was barely surviving once expenses were paid at the end of the month. He was living paycheck to paycheck like so many today.

Problem was he didn’t have a goal set in place or a direction.  My Client was a very intelligent man. But it doesn’t matter how smart you are, if you don’t have that goal and target set, you have no direction.  He thought having his business in place he was on his way to becoming a successful business owner.  Can you relate to this, all the hard work put in to your business and still struggling?

Consulting with him and finding out more about him and his business.  We sat down and brainstormed on how to grow his company and take advantage of his expertise in his field.  We worked through and found the business goals he wanted to achieve.  Once he had his business goals laid out, we worked on his plan of action.  The steps he needed to take in order to grow his business.  He had a direction and the path he was going to take. I have known him now for three years.  He has become good friend of mine through being his coach and strategist.

Goals give Direction to success!

Here is what you can do with your business and become like him, if you want to. That is up to you. Find the goals you want to achieve in business or for your personal life. Set your goals in place and you will have direction. With a direction your path to success is an easier road to follow.  I have developed a technique with steps that I can show you and teach you to be able to find those goals, and then implement the steps to find the direction once you have your goals set.

This technique works for all of the following areas in life, family, career, marriage, and knowledge. Can you imagine not having as much stress in your daily life knowing that you have a plan already in place and the steps you need to take?  Maybe you would have more freedom and time to devote to your interest outside of work.  You know, that this would be a great benefit to you making money and having freedom to do other things, that’s right.

You want to make goals and achieve them for your business goals and life too, don’t you!

Founding Fathers Goals

The goals of our founding Fathers

What would the Founding Fathers think of today’s world that we live in?  Would they have the same drive to achieve the goals of their day?   I am not talking about politics of today versus yester year.

What I am getting at is the goals that they set for themselves to achieve the things that they were able to.  They did it by their own hands and the drive to make something from nothing.  Coming to America they set for themselves goals from ideas of what they imagined.  Dreams upon dreams to make a life for themselves that was better than were they came from.

Could we today, have that same drive to achieve the goals that we set forth to build something from nothing.  Are we in a place to where we see that things could be better, and to make something from nothing, just as our fore-fathers did?  Do we have that same drive to make it happen and succeed as they have?

I say, yes that we can!

We need only to have the determination and the dream in place.  Having a dream is only the beginning of the journey.  With that dream, we need to then believe in that dream.  Give that dream life with our beliefs that it will come true.   Our fore-fathers had dreams of coming to America and starting a new life.  With that dream, they saved their money sold their belongings and boarded a ship for the new world.

The difference is after the dream what did they do?  They acted on that dream and so do we.  Action is what changes the dream to reality.  Hard work along with our belief that the dream belongs to us it is now a goal.  We have to build it into reality by working towards what is now a goal instead of a dream.  Without working towards the goal and putting action into it, it only remains a dream or a wish.   We can wish and dream about wanting material things or money a better life.  But without the work involved in making it a goal and pushing forward…, it will only be a dream.

Once we have started working on the goal, we need to keep a firm hold on that goal and not be persuaded away from the goal.  Many people, friends and even family will say that “you shouldn’t be doing that”, or “you’re just wasting your time you need a real job to do” etc…   People will say all kinds of negative comments, you know why?  Majority will be because they didn’t think of it first before you did. That they don’t want to see you fail, but by doing nothing your dream fails any ways, so why not go for the goal and achieve something from nothing.  Well meaning as some may even be, it is your goal now and you can and will achieve our goal.

Set your mind to it and never falter away from the goal you have set for yourself.  Just as the founding fathers made their dreams into goals and achieved them, so can you!  Before long you will begin to realize that the goal is about to become reality and you have succeeded where others haven’t.  From a dream to a goal to reality you worked hard and long to achieve your objective.  It is with in you to do the same as the founding fathers.  Once you set your mind to do it, and you can.

Stuttering to a singing beautiful song bird

I had the opportunity to work with a young lady that had, and I do mean had in the past tense, a stuttering issue.  This young lady of 14 years old was adopted by a family and really cares for her.  After taking her to speech therapist and saying she just had a lazy tongue was her issue.  That nothing could be done but repeated speech therapy sessions with the hope that it would go away on its own.

Talking with her father, he wanted to try every possible way to help his new daughter in any way that he could. He began telling me all that they have done to try and help her to overcome the stuttering.  I mentioned in a more matter of fact way that that would be easy to fix and overcome.  I am guessing that the father was a bit taken off guard as they have spent no telling how much money on speech classes and a speech therapist.  I gave him my business card and told him to call me to set up a time to meet.

After about a week I had not heard from him so I called and set up a time to meet with him, his wife and the young girl.  The day came and I met at their lovely home.  I had asked before hand if it would be ok to meet there, for the simple reason I wanted them to feel comfortable in their surroundings.  Also with her being 14, I wanted the parents right there with her to encourage and support her with a safe feeling as well.

We talked about what I do to answer their questions and to put them at ease.  I asked numerous questions as well to find out as much about the stuttering tendency.  I learned that being bounced from foster home to foster home before being adopted she developed the stutter.  I found out what the young girl saw as her future and her past as a line to begin a time line with her.  Being left handed her future was to the left and the past was to the right.  (I really had to pay attention myself to her line and not put my future/past representation as I talked with her.)

Going back in her past, talking with her asking questions, I found out that one of the foster homes she was in for a period of time.  The family was very loud and always seemed to her as they were arguing and yelling at one another.  She felt scared and didn’t know what to say when this was happening.  Because of this fear she had over the yelling and arguing she started to stutter out of fear and not knowing what she could say.  At first they would stop so that they could hear what she was saying, but that turned into ignoring her.  She continued to stutter knowing that once before it got them to stop arguing so she could talk to.

Using the time-line I was able to have her go to the time before the stuttering started back before the foster home she was in.  To visualize herself talking them seeing it that she spoke clear and without the stutter.  I asked her to fly forward to now, and take all that she learned from then till this moment.  Then, I brought her to the present time and also with the skills to speak clear and without the stuttering.  That she is heard and that she is now in a home full of love and caring for her.  I asked her to visualize the present and being able to speak without the stutter.  Once she could see that I asked her then to look out into the future and see herself speaking and knowing that the stutter is gone.

I met with her and her parents once more after that to go over it all with her one more time.   She did have a stutter episode at school when talking before her class.  So working with her again and adding in a boost of confidence for her for the times she will speak in front of others.  We went through the time line once again, to add the confidence and to visualize her speaking with pride and confidence.  She has now become a little songbird, singing all the time.

She hasn’t stuttered any more and has had a great year in school without kids picking at her over her stutter.  She has been singing at church when before she never did at church song services. The family is excited at her transformation into a young lady that is smiling and happy.  Her mother stated that she talks all the time now, but it is wonderful to hear her voice.  Now she is a little songbird not afraid to sing.

Goal to loose weight

Goal to loose weight

How I was able to loose 61 pounds without any special programs or special diets and supplements.  I set my goals and achieved them just like you can, RIGHT!

In October of 2009 I had to have another back surgery.  This was my sixth back surgery that I have had to go through.  The surgery went well and I was back to work in 10 days time.  I worked in an office so I was pretty much sedentary.   Sitting all day at a desk and not getting much exercise, well lets me honest here no exercise.  My diet was what ever sound good that I wanted to have.

I put on so much weight in a very little time frame.  Almost over night it seemed that the weight just appeared.  We all know that it didn’t, but it was from eating the wrong foods, such as the easy fast foods, and not exercising at all.  I ballooned up to 269 pounds.  I didn’t have a spare tire or a beer gut, I had a whiskey barrel around my waistline.  I was more than twice the size that I was when I graduated high school twenty years earlier.

Imagine seeing double in the mirror each morning when I would be getting ready for work.  I was seeing two of me in the mirror.  I was doing the manly ego thing when I was around others and sucking my gut in.  No one would notice the weight I put on.  I was lying to myself about my weight.  One morning when I was putting on my shoes and was trying to reach over my big belly and it squeezing my lungs to where I was running out of breath just trying to tie my shoes. I had to make a change and fast. I had to loss weight.

I made up my mind that I was not going to look this way and be unhealthy any more.  My back surgeon had been telling me that I needed to loose some weight because of my back issues.  He told me that I would feel so much better if I could loose some weight.  So now I had two things were in place that I could use to focus on to loose the weight. I had the back issues with the pain and I had the way I seen myself.

I was going to loose the weight and I was going to do it fast.  I joined a gym and was ready to work out.  Problem was I hadn’t set a goal to reach, a goal to focus on and commit to.  So after spending money on a gym membership and new gym clothes and shoes, I was off to the gym.  I talked to a trainer and got a routine to start working out.  First month I was religious about being at the gym.  I worked out and went through the steps on what I was shown. Then the second month and I wasn’t as enthused to be at the gym.

I started slacking off and would tell myself; “I will just double up tomorrow”.  But tomorrow turned into the next day and then distractions became more important.  I was lost on loosing all the weight I had put on.  Still eating bad foods and bad habits didn’t help at all.  I started with good intentions but not a goal in place.  Without a goal, I had no direction.  With no direction I was doomed to fail, and I did.

Another year went by and then another I was still at or around 269 pounds.  Then came back surgery number seven! I thought to myself what am I going to do?  What if I put on more weight after this surgery?  Is this surgery because I didn’t loose the weight like my surgeon had asked me to do so many times?  Had I put myself in the position to have this seventh back surgery because of the weight?  Probably so, I can’t say for sure though.

Surgery seven was a success.  The surgeon was able to put the rod and screws in my back.  I was up and walking by the third day.  Came home and lay in bed for two weeks resting and only moving when I had to. I was walking but had to use a walker.  Once I was able to move around I was determined to not put on more weight.  After a few months, I was back to normal, Kim and I started walking 1 mile a day then two miles.  That was great but I wasn’t loosing any weight.

I knew I had to change my habits and what I was eating.  I would sit down at the computer working on writing my book and would drink a 2 liter Dr Pepper.  During the day I would consume two to three 20 oz bottles of Dr Pepper.  There is so much sugar in them I would find out.  So one day when Kim asked if I needed Dr Peppers I told her not to buy anymore.  I was quitting the Dr Pepper; it was my addiction to be honest.  I would have headaches if I missed drinking one. I changed my eating habits and started eating healthier foods.

Still at 263 pounds, I sat down at the kitchen table and wrote out what I wanted for myself.  I wanted to weigh 190 to 210 and not have back issues.  I committed to loosing the weight and told myself that I was going to be 200 pounds.  I set my goals to loose so much each week.  I was going to exercise more and not just walking.  I was going to get my heart rate up and loose the fat reserves.

At first it was hard but I was focused on my goal and I was going to make it.  I didn’t take any special diets or newest weight loose gimmick.  I was going to loose the weight that I had put on myself.  I wanted to look better in the mirror and to Kim.  I had to do this for myself.

To reach my goal of being 200 pounds I had to set smaller more attainable goals.  By doing these smaller goals I could see the results of that smaller goal faster.  I could see the progress that I was making.  Seeing the progress made me more determined to succeed in reaching my goal.    By setting up the smaller goals I could celebrate the victories more often and be proud of myself, which built up my self esteem.

I had learned to set goals when I was younger dealing with abuse.  So I had the tools to set the goals now to loose all this extra weight I had put on.  The steps that I teach others how to set their own goals to be able to achieve for themselves, they can use for weight loss or in their business.

By setting my own goals, I was able to loose 61 pounds.  I now weigh 209 pounds and will continue on till I reach my new goal of making it to 190 pounds.  Without the goal in place and a direction to focus on, I would have never been able to get my weight down.  I feel great and don’t have as much back pains any more.

You too, can have these same results without the fad diets and crazy new gizmos and supplements.  Set a goal for yourself.  Commit to that goal.  Focus on that goal each and every day.  If you would like more information on how you can set your goals.  Contact me.

Update on my goal to loose weight.

As of today July 19, 2014; I am 10 pounds away from reaching my goal weight of 190 pounds.  I have set the small goals and have reached them one by one.  Every time I have reached a one of the small goals, it has motivated me to keep going and see the progress I have made.

I hope my success will be motivation for you to reach your goals in weight lose and also in reaching other goals you set for yourself.
